The land of gods, Uttarakhand is rich in places where you can feel it. With its breathtaking mountains and snow-capped peaks, the state has a lot to offer on its plate. Home to Nanda Devi, the second highest peak in India as well as a host of other peaks over 7000 meters, Uttarakhand is able to meet the needs of both professional and novice trekkers.
Known as the Garhwal Himalayas, it is further divided into the Eastern Kumaon Division and the Western Garhwal Division. The best trekking season is between April and June and again during October and November. Here is a list of some of the best places to trek in Uttarakhand.
Gomukh Tapovan or Gangotri Glacier Trek
It is a 4 or 5 day trek starting from Gangotri to Gangotri Glacier. It is one of the most popular treks and is usually taken as a religious pilgrimage. The literal meaning of Gomukh is the snout of a cow and it signifies the origin of the river Ganges.
One can enjoy a spectacular view of Mount Shivling on one side and Bhagirathi Peak on the other. Mount Shivling whose name refers to the holy symbol of Lord Shiva, is exceptionally beautiful. Hikers can take an additional 3 or 4 days to hike around the Tapovan (meadow) covering various peaks and glaciers.

Deoriatal and Chandrashila Trek
It is a 4 day trek starting from Rishikesh. It’s a little more than a half-day’s drive to the trailhead in Sari Village. An easy 45-minute walk will take you to the Deorital Lake, which offers spectacular views. This is a wonderful camping site. The next day you can go to Chopta and then to the summit of Chandrashila. It has breathtaking views of Chaukhamba. The hills look all pink in April as they are covered with rhododendrons in bloom.
Valley of Flowers Trek
This trek will take you to the most famous region of the wildflowers of the Himalayas. Unlike other treks, this one is best done during the monsoon season as the flowers are in full bloom at this time of the year. This trek to Valley of Flowers is one of the best places to trek in Uttarakhand during the monsoon season.
Monsoon certainly makes the trek tough for the trekkers but the beauty of the flowers makes all the trouble worth it. One can stay at one of the lodges in Ghangaria to soak up and soak up the rain at night. The trek starts from Govind Ghat and the first day is spent hiking to the small village of Ghangaria.
This trek is scary. This beautiful 6 day trek takes you to the “haunted” lake of Roopkund. Known for the human skeletons that can be seen in the lake, legends say that the lake contains the ancient remains of several hundred people.
Despite all the mysteries, the beautiful surrounding makes this trek worth taking. The trail begins in dense oak and rhododendron forests before emerging above the trekline where trekkers can get spectacular views of the towering peaks of Trishul, Nanda Ghunti and Badrinath.
Rupin Pass Trek
High waterfalls, pristine scenery and flower-laden meadows ensure that this trek is sure to please everyone. The trail starts from the small village of Dhaula and reaches the Rupin Pass in a span of 6 days. The area is mostly uninhabited with trails and hence trekking gear needs to be prepared with a keen eye.

Situated in the Kumaon part of the Garhwal Himalayas, it is a spectacular trek in Uttarakhand through a wooded region with incredible views of Nanda Devi, Nanda Kot and Trishul which are some of the highest peaks in this part of the Himalayas. It is a 6 days trek up to the glacier on the banks of Pindari River. The trekking is not very difficult and the locals hold the trek at a high level.
The 5 day trek starts from a small village in Uttarkashi and will take one to the beautiful lake of Dodital. Due to the low altitude this trek in Uttarakhand can be taken throughout the year with the exception of the monsoon period from June to August. The lake is famous for its golden trout which can be easily seen in the crystal clear waters. It is set against a forest of oak and rhododendron trees that bloom in April. This trek is considered as the easy to moderate level winter trek in Uttarakhand which adds this trek among the list of best places to trek in Uttarakhand.
