“Mussoorie” – The Queen of Hills

Mussoorie, known as the Queen of Hills, a hill station is located in the Dehradun district of the state of Uttarakhand. It is located at an elevation of about 2000 meters above sea level at the foothills of the great Himalayan Mountains. This hill station offers spectacular views of the Doon Valley and the Shivalik ranges. This place is also considered the gateway to the religious centers of Yamunotri and Gangotri.

Mussoorie is derived from the name Mansoor, It is a type of shrub that was once found in abundance in the region. Many people also call this place “Mansoori”. This beautiful hill station is popular for the ancient temples, hills, waterfalls, valleys, wildlife sanctuaries, and educational institutions located here. Jwala Devi Temple, Nag Devta Temple, Bhadraj Temple, and Surkanda Devi Temple are some of the famous religious places in and around Mussoorie.

Apart from being a beautiful tourist destination, Mussoorie is also famous for its educational institutions. There are many schools that were established during the British rule and are still continuing, among these institutions some of the best and oldest boarding schools of Mussoorie are Oak Grove School, St. George College, Wynberg Allen School, and Woodstock School.

Kempty Falls

Kempty Falls has been synonymous with Mussoorie for many years. It is the most prominent attraction of Mussoorie that takes you closest to nature. This waterfall leaves a different impression on every tourist and gives a glimpse of the beauty overlooked by nature. Kempty Fall is just 15 kilometers from Mussoorie on the way to Chakrata. It is also famous as the landmark of Mussoorie. There is a cistern at the bottom of this waterfall, whose water is quite cold and tourists also come here to take a dip in the water. It is very pleasant to sit here and watch the water falling from the fall, listen to its voice, feel the greenery.

Lal Tibba

Lal Tibba is the highest point of Mussoorie. This place is located at an elevation of 2275 meters above sea level in the Landour area of Mussoorie, The Lal Tibba is also known as Depot Hill because of its former use as a military depot. One can have an amazing view of sunrise and sunset from this point. A Japanese telescope was installed by the municipality here in 1967 with a view to providing tourists with more spectacular and enchanting views of the Himalayan peaks. With the help of this telescope, tourists can see other nearby places like – Kedarnath, Bandarpoonch, Badrinath, and other Himalayan ranges. Apart from this, tourists can also see the old houses and buildings representing the British architecture style here.

Happy Valley

Happy Valley is located to the west of the library point. The valley is famous for its IAS Academy, Company Garden, Estates, and Tibetan Temple located here. Tourists can enjoy a walk from Happy Valley to the Hathipaon estate. Happy Valley is the place where Tibetans first came to India. In 1959, when the spiritual leader, Guru Dalai Lama went to live in Dharamshala, some Tibetans fled Lhasa and came to Mussoorie here. The majority of Tibetans in Mussoorie lives in this area. This place is decorated in a very beautiful way. There is a lot of houses and various types of food stalls.

Camel’s Back Road

Camel’s back road is named after a natural cluster of rocks that are shaped like a camel’s hump. It is a 4-kilometer long stretch that connects two major locations of Mussoorie. Starting at Library Point and running up to Kulri Bazar. The slope adjacent to the road includes a colonial cemetery dating back to the mid-19th century. It is ideal for morning and late evening walks, with beautiful views of the surrounding hills at sunset and sunrise this place gives you a spectacular view. One can enjoy horse rides and rickshaw rides at the camelback road.

Situated at an elevation of 2122 meters Gun Hill is a famous tourist destination of Mussoorie. It is the second-highest peak of Mussoorie which has great historical significance. Before Independence, the cannon used to fire from this hill to help local people to know the time. This hill gives a beautiful view of the magnificent ranges of the Himalayan Mountains as well as a mall road which is a famous shopping center of Mussoorie. It is easily accessible by cable car from Mall Road and one can reach here in 5 min by cable car. There is another option available to reach a gun hill which is trekking, you can start your trek from mall road and reach the gun hill.

Mussoorie Lake

Developed by the City Board and the Mussoorie – Dehradun Development Authority the Mussoorie Lake is one of the best picnic spots in Mussoorie. Tourists can visit here and enjoy boating in the lake. Located on the Mussoorie – Dehradun road, this place provides a wonderful view of the Doon Valley and the surrounding village. Apart from boating one can indulge themselves with other adventure sports like Paragliding, Rope Ride, Zipline, Water Zorbing, etc.

Christ Church

Built by the Britishers in the year 1836 Christ Church is considered to be the oldest church in the Himalayan ranges. In 1906, the Princess of Wales (who later became Queen Mary of England) visited this church. She planted a cedar tree in the courtyard of this church and this tree is still here. The church is built in the Gothic architecture style and depicts the life of Jesus Christ in glass windows very beautifully. The church altar also depicts Jesus Christ hanging on the cross. The interior of the church is very beautifully decorated. It attracts a large number of tourists and devotees to pray and admire the beautiful architecture of the place throughout the year.

Jwalaji Temple

Dedicated to Goddess Durga, Jwalaji temple invites devotees from all over the region. The temple has a Statue of Jwala Devi, which is believed to bless and grant all the wishes of her devotees. This temple is surrounded by lush green forest and from here one can see amazing and panoramic views of Shivalik ranges, Yamuna River, and Doon Valley. The temple attracts a large number of pilgrims during the Navratras (a sacred nine-day festival) as it is considered especially auspicious to pray and do penance for sins.

The Mall Road

Nag Devta Temple
